How the MET Formula Works

Formula

Calories burned = MET x weight (kg) x duration (hours)

Step-by-step

  1. Find the MET value for the activity (standard tables or wearables report this).
  2. Multiply MET by your body weight in kilograms.
  3. Multiply by time in hours (minutes divided by 60) to estimate calories burned.

Notes

A per-minute shortcut is 0.0175 x MET x body weight (kg). MET values are population averages so actual calorie burn varies with efficiency and effort.
